What Everyone Should Know (2023)

PayPal is one of the largest online payments systems, with 227 million active accounts around the globe. It’s also a popular option for accepting payments among online sellers.

But as with any payments system, you’ll need to factor transaction fees into your pricing and the cost of running your business. Ahead, learn how to calculate PayPal fees, what cut PayPal takes, and how PayPal fees work with Shopify Payments.

What are PayPal fees?

PayPal fees are the costs associated with using the platform to process payments and send or receive money. Fees are applied either as a percentage of the transaction amount or as a flat fee, depending on how you’re sending or receiving money.

Why does PayPal charge a fee?

PayPal charges a fee for merchants to use its platform. PayPal is a for-profit company, so it looks to earn a profit after paying all of its operating expenses. PayPal does not charge a fee for consumer-to-consumer money transfers.

How to calculate PayPal fees

If you’re a consumer purchasing goods and services in the US you don’t pay any fees for using PayPal, but if you’re a merchant selling goods or services, you’ll have to pay a fee. Often this is charged as a percentage of the transaction plus a fixed fee.

Fees vary depending on the transaction type, seller location and currency, and buyer location and currency.

If you’re selling in the US, you’re charged 2.99% of the transaction amount in order to receive money via PayPal transfer. Then, if you’re processing a credit card, you’ll have to pay 2.99% plus a 49¢ flat fee (this amount is based on the currency of the payment). For example, a payment of $50 will be charged a $1.99 processing fee ($1.50 + 49¢).

When receiving payments from outside of the US, you’re charged the same domestic fee plus an additional 1.5% of the transaction and another fixed fee based on the currency.

How PayPal fees work with Shopify Payments

PayPal Express is a supported payment gateway for Shopify merchants and is easy to integrate into your store. When you set up your Shopify store, Shopify will create a PayPal Express Checkout account for you, using the email address associated with your Shopify account.

If you already have a PayPal account with that email address, you’ll receive payments from orders made with PayPal right away. If you don’t, you’ll have to finish setting up your PayPal account. You can add your email address to your existing PayPal account or create a new PayPal business account with the same email address you use to sign in to your store.

If you’re using Shopify Payments and PayPal Express together as your payment gateways, you pay only the fees for the payment gateway that your customer uses to check out. You won’t be double billed.
