If you’ve been around here for a while, you already know how keen we are on the concept of capsule wardrobes—a closet full of items that can be mixed and matched with one another for an infinite number of combinations and a permanent fix to your “I don’t know what to wear today” conundrum.
Summer is right around the corner, and if we’ve learned anything over the past couple years, it’s that the best pieces sell out fast, which means the entirety of our summer wardrobes are already being planned. Lots of colors, breezy linen, wicker accessories—if you don’t feel excited for summer yet, well, you’re about to.
After months of cold weather (and, let’s be honest, a spring that for many of us felt like winter), we’re ready to dive headfirst into the waters of the most glorious season of the entire year. No matter what your schedule holds—though we hope it’s jam-packed with a lot of patio drinks—these pieces can be mixed, matched, and worn on repeat until the first leaf of autumn falls to the ground.
Out to brunch
One of the greatest joys of summer is an afternoon brunch (hopefully on a patio), and dressing for them is half of the enjoyment in itself. Pair a green tank with some linen shorts that’ll let your mimosa bloat exist with ease, and top it off with summer-exclusive accessories that’ll earn you compliments all day long.
To happy hour
There’s nothing like throwing on a dress on a warm day, especially if it’s a chic midi that can be dressed up or down. Make it casual for the day or office with sneakers, then swap them out for a pair of heeled sandals for your post-work happy hour.
For your hot-girl walk
As if hot-girl walks weren’t already our favorite activity of the day, summer is about to make them infinitely better (as most things are when you aren’t being hit in the face with sleet). Opt for the activewear dress our editors literally can’t get enough of (that has built-in bike shorts for optimum comfort) and a pair of colorful sneakers to look the part.
To run errands
Upgrade your T-shirt-and-jean-shorts combo with a chic graphic tee, a seasonal tote, and sneakers that’ll put your basic white ones to shame.
On a date
If you’re looking for a piece to add to your wardrobe that you’ll literally wear for years, this dress is it. Perfect for backyard barbecues, date nights, and just about anything in between, it’s as easy to wear as it comes and can be completely changed based on what you pair it with.
To the farmers market
Another favorite summer pastime, a Sunday morning farmers market calls for a step up from jean shorts and a tee (after all, there are only so many of them, and we have to get in as many main-character moments as we can). Throw on an easy shirt dress, chic pair of sandals, and sunglasses that’ll hide how many drinks you had on Saturday night.
On a night out with friends
For an easy summer monochrome moment, opting for shades of beige in similar but slightly different hues will hit the nail on the head for you. Chic, tailored shorts will give you a put-together vibe that also reads as completely effortless. Win, win.
